Iran Considered Retaliation Against Ukraine Over Maritime Incident, New York Times Reports

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, The New York Times, quoting Iranian and Western officials, has reported that Tehran had considered targeting a maritime port in Ukraine as a retaliatory measure following an alleged act of aggression by the country against an Iranian ship. However, a series of political efforts has reportedly calmed the situation under the current circumstances.

Late last night, Iran’s Foreign Minister engaged in a call with his Ukrainian counterpart, stating that any aggression against Iranian citizens or interests is unacceptable and that full compensation for damages must be provided. According to Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, assured him during the phone call that the attack on the Iranian vessel was unintentional and that Ukraine has no desire to escalate tensions. Araghchi reiterated that Iran also seeks to avoid escalation but emphasized that any encroachment on Iranian citizens or interests is unacceptable and that all incurred damages and losses must be fully compensated.
