UN Security Council Convenes to Discuss Afghanistan’s Situation

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United Nations Security Council is convening today, Wednesday, to examine the situation in Afghanistan. The meeting is based on data published by the Mehr News Agency, citing the Anadolu Agency.

During the session, the acting head of UNAMA, Georgette Gagnon, will present a report on the latest developments in the country. The primary focus of the meeting will be the review of human rights and women’s rights, the process of inclusive political engagement, the activities of terrorist groups, and the border tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Council members will also hold consultations behind closed doors prior to the public session.

Despite a consensus on the necessity of a stable and terrorism-free Afghanistan, divergences in viewpoints exist among the members. The United States advocates for a focus on counter-terrorism and the release of detained citizens. Conversely, China and Russia emphasize engagement, unconditional economic assistance, and the unfreezing of central bank assets.

According to the latest report from the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the Security Council, “widespread human rights violations, the absence of an inclusive government, growing economic pressures, and persistent terrorist threats continue to undermine the long-term stability of Afghanistan.”
