Suspicious Bag Near UN Headquarters Prompts Evacuations and Street Closures in New York

A suspicious suitcase found on a Manhattan sidewalk on Tuesday afternoon triggered the dispatch of a bomb disposal team and led to the closure of streets and the temporary evacuation of the Chrysler Building. The incident occurred as New York City is under heightened security measures for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.

The suitcase was discovered around 3 p.m. local time near East 43rd Street and Third Avenue, close to the Chrysler Building and approximately two blocks from the UN headquarters. Following the discovery of materials inside the bag by a New York Police Department K-9 unit, bomb squad officers and the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit were dispatched to the scene. Other security agencies were also reportedly present in the area.

The Chrysler Building was evacuated as a precautionary measure while authorities investigated the suitcase. The New York Police Department initially announced on X, formerly Twitter, “Due to a suspicious package, streets from 42nd to 44th Street are closed. Please avoid the area.” Approximately 90 minutes later, officials confirmed that the contents of the suitcase posed no threat and the scene was cleared.
