Netanyahu Faces Unprecedented International Isolation Ahead of UN Speech
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the American newspaper The Washington Post has emphasized that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing new and unprecedented levels of international isolation. This situation comes just weeks before decisive elections and shortly before his scheduled speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday.
The newspaper characterized the current circumstances as “decisive” for the political future of Israel and its leadership. As of Wednesday, Netanyahu had no scheduled meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump during his visit to New York. Trump is slated to arrive in New York on Thursday and will return directly to the occupied territories without an overnight stay.
Jesse Weinberg, a researcher specializing in U.S.-Middle East relations at the Institute for National Security Studies, commented to The Washington Post, stating that the fact this trip is only for one day and that Trump will not meet with him confirms the complex situation in which Israel and its leaders are currently embroiled. He added, “Israel finds itself in a precarious position.”
The Washington Post noted that this isolation is not surprising. Last year’s UN General Assembly saw over 100 diplomats from more than 50 countries walk out of the hall in a rare and strong protest following Netanyahu’s entrance.
The newspaper further reported that in recent months, Israel’s international standing has further declined amid severe criticism of its actions in Gaza. This is compounded by increasing international anger over the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank and the violent actions of Israeli settlers there.
In this regard, 12 European countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and France, announced sanctions against Israeli settlements as part of punitive measures.
The report indicated that with the Knesset elections approaching, Netanyahu’s domestic critics hold him and the hardliners in his cabinet responsible for damaging Israel’s international image.
Furthermore, a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center and published in April revealed that 60% of American adults hold a negative view of Israel. Calls among U.S. lawmakers for significant changes to military aid provided to Israel are also on the rise.
The Washington Post added that among European nations, Spain and Italy initiated calls to restrict arms sales to Israel in the initial weeks following the October 7, 2023, operation. Several other countries, including France and the United Kingdom, have recognized the State of Palestine over the past year.
On a cultural level, tensions and boycotts against Israel have also expanded. Ireland announced its boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest in protest of Israel’s participation. The Netherlands, Iceland, Slovenia, and Spain joined the boycott of the 2026 competition.
