US Imposes Up to 50% Tariffs on Canadian Goods in Trade Dispute

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the White House has declared that the United States will impose tariffs of up to 50 percent on a broad spectrum of Canadian products. This action is a direct response to Canada’s alleged “discriminatory” practices concerning American automobiles, alcoholic beverages, and dairy products.

President Donald Trump signed three executive orders that enable the implementation of these tariffs, leveraging the Tariff Act of 1930. This legislation permits the imposition of duties up to 50 percent on imports from specific countries.

The targeted goods are reported to include items such as alcoholic beverages, hockey sticks, cement, dairy products, furniture, fishing rods, seeds, clothing, and wigs. These tariffs are scheduled to take effect on August 19.

The White House stated that the decision stems from Canada’s actions against American automotive imports and the cessation of sales for American alcoholic beverages, which were reportedly in response to earlier U.S. tariffs. The administration further noted that imports of American automobiles into Canada decreased by 22 percent last year, while alcoholic beverage imports saw an 81 percent decline.
