UNICEF Warns of Devastating Impact of Sudan Conflict on Children After Deadly Market Attack

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, UNICEF has warned that children in Sudan are enduring the heavy toll of the nation’s expanding conflict, following a drone attack on a market in North Kordofan province that resulted in at least six fatalities, including two children, and left more than 26 injured. The attack specifically targeted a market in the city of Al-Rahd, causing the deaths of two children and four adults, with over 20 others wounded. Among the injured were six children aged between six and fourteen.

Sheldon Yette, UNICEF Representative in Sudan, stated that the recent attack serves as a stark reminder of the horrific casualties the conflict in Sudan is inflicting upon children. He emphasized that markets are vital gathering places for families to procure food, earn income, and meet their basic needs, and they should never become sites of death and destruction.

Yette further noted that the recent acts of violence in the city of Al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, and its surrounding areas have drawn significant global attention, cautioning that the situation across the entire province remains deeply concerning. UNICEF reports that recurrent attacks are leading to the destruction of homes, schools, health facilities, water systems, and markets. This destruction deprives children of access to essential healthcare, education, nutrition, safe water, and sanitation services, forcing an increasing number of families to flee their homes.

The organization also highlighted that insecurity and attacks along key supply routes are impeding humanitarian operations, thereby restricting access to some of the most vulnerable communities within the country.
