Syrian Interim Leader Denies Military Intervention Plans in Lebanon, Cites Desire to Avoid Israel Conflict
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Ahmed Al-Shar’a, the interim leader of Syria, stated in an interview with Al Jazeera that Syria has no intention of intervening militarily in Lebanon. He indicated that discussions are ongoing with the Lebanese government to identify solutions that would help Lebanon overcome its crisis and reach a state of security, suggesting that the solution for Lebanon is not necessarily purely security-based.
Al-Shar’a further elaborated that any chaos in Lebanon would directly impact Syria. He expressed support for the Lebanese government’s control over weapons and decisions regarding peace and war. Syria is also concerned about the potential expansion of conflict across the region.
Regarding Israeli actions against Syria, Al-Shar’a asserted that Syria is avoiding engagement with Israel, as it is in Syria’s best interest.
He also revealed that Syria is collaborating with a group of countries to achieve a security agreement with Israel. According to Al-Shar’a, a successful security agreement with Israel could pave the way for comprehensive peace, without Syria relinquishing its rights regarding the occupied Golan Heights.
The interim leader highlighted that the lifting of economic sanctions would be ineffective unless Syria is removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Addressing the implementation of an agreement with Kurdish factions, Al-Shar’a acknowledged the slow progress but reiterated hope for its success. He mentioned the formation of a committee, in line with international principles and with the cooperation of experienced nations, to manage the issue of missing persons. The process of implementing the agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is proceeding slowly, but optimism remains.
Concerning Iraq, Al-Shar’a reported a continuous improvement in bilateral relations.
Regarding relations with Russia, the Syrian interim leader stated that discussions concerning the future of Russian military bases in Syria are still ongoing and have not yet concluded.
