Ruthe was appointed to this position and replaced Jens Stoltenberg in a situation where the war in Ukraine has created a security crisis for the members of this military coalition.
US President Joe Biden and his counterparts will officially welcome Rutte at the NATO summit hosted by Washington on July 9-11.
The Dutch Prime Minister will officially replace Stoltenberg from October 1. Stoltenberg has been the Secretary General of NATO for more than a decade. His General Secretary’s term was extended several times due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022. Stoltenberg warmly welcomed Rothe’s appointment as his successor.
