Putin Highlights Growing Use of National Currencies in SCO Trade

Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the increasing reliance on national currencies within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) trade, noting their significant share in Russia’s exchanges with member states.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at the SCO Heads of State Council meeting in Bishkek, the capital of Kazakhstan, that the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has traversed a considerable path over its 25 years, emerging as an influential entity in a multipolar world.

Putin added that Russia supports endeavors aimed at enhancing the SCO’s effectiveness, with the strengthening of trade among its member countries being a primary objective.

The Russian official highlighted that SCO members are progressively increasing their use of national currencies in transactions. He noted that the share of national currencies in Russia’s trade with SCO partners now exceeds 98 percent. Trade turnover between Russia and SCO member states surpassed $400 billion in 2025.

Putin further commented that cooperation among SCO member states contributes to fostering peace and stability across the Eurasian continent. He advocated for the SCO Development Bank to remain as independent as possible from countries that weaponize finance.

He urged SCO member states to exert all efforts to eliminate provocative actions that instigate armed conflicts from global practices.
