EU Council President Warns of West Bank Annexation Threatening Two-State Solution

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, European Council President António Costa has warned that current developments in the occupied West Bank, including its de facto annexation, threaten the prospect of achieving a two-state solution. Costa made these remarks on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly during a meeting focused on the two-state solution and a comprehensive peace plan for Gaza. He stated that the two-state solution in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is increasingly under threat daily. Citing settler violence, impunity, community displacement, and what he termed “de facto annexation,” Costa emphasized that Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. He underscored that immediate action is necessary to preserve the two-state solution and the path to peace. The European Council President also called for the revival of Palestinian Authority legitimacy through elections, stating that the European Union strongly supports holding such elections and urges Israel to facilitate their organization. Costa asserted that the international community and the Palestinian Authority must create new hope for the young Palestinian generation for a different future. He concluded by reiterating that action is required to maintain the two-state solution and the path to peace.
