European Diesel Prices Hit Record High Amid Global Fuel Shocks
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, diesel prices at fueling stations across the European Union have surged to a record €2.23 per liter, up from €2.16 the previous week, as reported by Agence France-Presse based on national data released by the European Commission. This unprecedented price surge, documented since 2005, has been recorded in 19 of the 27 EU member states, including Germany, France, and Italy, attributed to energy disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East and the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Denmark and Finland registered the highest prices, with diesel reaching €2.56 per liter. Germany followed at €2.46, with Belgium and France around €2.40, and Italy at approximately €2.30. While countries like Spain and Sweden also experienced price increases, their levels remain below the peaks seen in 2022 after the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war.
These figures are published by the European Commission’s “Oil Bulletin” based on data from national authorities and reflect prices at fueling stations at the beginning or end of the preceding week. In the United States, diesel prices this week leaped to a record $6.52 per gallon, a nearly 76% increase from approximately $3.69 last year. This escalating fuel cost has become a growing economic and political challenge in the weeks leading up to the midterm elections.
The administration of President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a 90-day ban on diesel exports, a move theoretically aimed at retaining more fuel domestically to help curb prices. Fuel markets have been subjected to a series of simultaneous shocks in recent months. Energy flow through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab has diminished, and refineries in the Middle East have sustained damage. Concurrently, Ukraine has targeted Russian refineries, while China has imposed successive restrictions on refined oil product exports. These events coincide with reduced shipments from Japan and South Korea.
